GASTONIA, N.C. — The Kingsmen Baseball Academy has passed test after test thrown at it in its first season. Beginning Tuesday, the Kingsmen will start a week designed to create losers, battling through a grueling ten-team double elimination tournament searching to become the ABA’s first ever champion.
After a positive showing for the Kingsmen’s prospect and varsity teams two weeks ago in the ABA Round Robin, the Black and Gold go into the season-ending tournament at LakePoint as the second and sixth seeds in their respective brackets.
The varsity team will kick off their week in Georgia against a familiar foe. In the first time slot of the day at 9:30, the Kingsmen will take on the Blacksmiths of P27 in the first round.
With a win, the Kingsmen would advance to play one of Wellington, A3, and Clubhouse Commanders in round two at 12:15 on Wednesday. However, a loss puts the KBA in the losers bracket where their Wednesday game would need be the first of six consecutive wins in order to secure the title.
Meanwhile, the prospect team has a bit of a break before they start their championship bid. Their game at 3:00 will played against the winner of the early clash between WSA and Central Pointe. Because the Kingsmen secured the second seed, their advantages comes in the form of playing a team who has already battled through a win that same day. Regardless, the Kingsmen will need to come ready if they are to start their tournament strong.
With a win, they’d move on to play the winner of P27 and Dominion Sports Collective on Wednesday, two northern division foes. If they lose however, they’d face the loser of PDG Academy and ECA, needing seven wins consecutively in order to win the championship.
In other words, winning early this week is crucial for both teams’ championship hopes.
